Therese CannataMs. Cannata is the senior partner of the firm, with 35 years of experience as lead counsel in numerous jury trials, court trials, administrative proceedings, and arbitrations in both state and federal court.

In the early 1980's, Ms. Cannata acquired significant jury trial experience while a senior trial attorney at the San Francisco Public Defender's Office under the leadership of Jeff Brown and Peter Keane. Ms. Cannata thereafter joined Morrison & Foerster as an associate attorney, representing corporate clients in state and federal courts, including antitrust, intellectual property, "white collar" crime, and commercial fraud actions in state and federal courts. She joined the Oakland law firm of Alborg & Dictor as an associate in late 1989, which became Alborg, Veiluva & Cannata LLP in 1996. While a partner in their Walnut Creek office, Ms. Cannata developed her business litigation practice in the areas of title insurance and escrow disputes, legal malpractice defense, corporate and partnership dissolutions, and bankruptcy creditors claims for lenders. In 1999, she moved her office to downtown San Francisco, and in 2003, she founded this firm.

Ms. Cannata currently specializes in general business litigation, environmental law, real estate law, and probate and trust litigation, accounting fraud cases, commercial lease disputes, and professional liability law. She also continues her work in the field of criminal defense, defending individuals and businesses charged with environmental law crimes. For the past ten years, Ms. Cannata has added to her repertoire substantial expertise in working with small and mid-sized businesses on environmental and regulatory compliance.

Whether representing individuals, small businesses, family trusts, or large corporations, Ms. Cannata infuses her energy and experience into each of her cases to solve tough legal problems and ensure that every case is ready for trial when that time arrives. She values team work and a commitment to excellence – in service to the firm’s clients and as members of the legal profession. Ms. Cannata understands that consistent case management and regular communication saves litigation dollars for her clients.

Ms. Cannata completed her undergraduate studies at San Francisco State University in 1976, and received her J.D. at University of San Francisco in 1979. She was admitted to the California bar in 1979, and is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court in the Northern, Southern, Central and Eastern Districts of California, the U.S. Court of Appeal, Ninth Circuit, and the U.S. Court of Federal Claims. She was a certified Criminal Law Specialist from1983 to 1994. Ms. Cannata is a member of the American Bar Association, Bar Association of San Francisco, and University of San Francisco Inn of Court. She is a regular faculty member for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, teaching at the Deposition and Trial programs. In addition to her business law practice, Ms. Cannata mentors the firm’s associate attorneys to provide pro bono legal services to persons and organizations in need throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. She is also active with the St. Ignatius Church Shelter Meal Program serving homeless adults and families.

Ms. Cannata was born in Houston, Texas. She is married to Robert Bowman (a journalist) and resides in San Francisco, California, where they raised their three children, who pursue careers other than law. When not in trial, she enjoys cooking, gardening, the SF Giants, and movies.
